US DOT #488466 The Biggest Flat Rate Moving Company In The Country
Doesn't Get Any Worse
You know those horror stories you hear about movers and moving?? .... Well, FlatRate lives up to those and added some new chapters!! I went through the entire process - had a video call of my house and garage and arranged for full pack moving. Movers arrived and seemed legit annoyed that they were movers... one guy had driving moccasins on and spent the majority of the time smoking in my back stairs. Corporate kept calling me throughout the day saying they had to charge me more for "all the lamps" in my house (there were 2 on bedside tables that I hadn't already packed) and "art work". They also charged me extra for "wardrobe" boxes. $1100 added the day of the move, and then in transit I got another call saying another $1109 was being added for "lamps and extra wardrobe".... Nope - that was already added, but they wouldn't give up even when I said I wasn't paying that and would dispute. They also charged me over $10k for the move, even though I have signed paperwork for $6500... and keep saying they don't know why I keep reaching out to them when they've already refunded me - weird, because AMEX is pretty thorough and no refund has been issued. When they finally arrived in Santa Barbara they tried to force me to sign a piece of paper saying I would pay the extra amount and I refused and we had a full stand off at a storage unit. In short, they are trying to charge me over $10k for a 400 mile move of a 2 bedroom house. And the funniest part - those lamp boxes and wardrobe boxes were filled with a glass beverage dispenser and towels..... this company is deceitful and fraudulent.... Stay far far away!!

Broke Everything
They broke or severely damaged 5/8 pieces of my furniture. Now they are dragging the claims process out and are slow to get someone to come inspect it, knowing I can l't fit the broken stuff in my apartment and have to get rid of it in order to furnish my place. So I've been trying to get someone here for a week while living without even a table to eat on they demolished it. This is more than a nightmare. Not only did I pay a bunch to have this stuff moved, they then destroyed it. I'm considering getting a family lawyer involved.

Bad Experience
We had no choice in using these movers because they were a subcontractor with the moving service my partner's work was using. For those who do have a choice, stay FAR FAR away from this company. This was our experience with the Bay Area branch. The movers came and started packing things with no explanation of what they were going to be doing, no walk through, no discussion of high value items, nothing. They were putting breakable things into boxes with no padding and were not labeling the boxes until we asked them to. So many ridiculous things happened, like they insisted they had no moving blankets (what moving company has no moving blankets??) and then later we saw a stack of moving blankets in their truck. They left the moving truck with our boxes unattended, doors open, on a busy street for several long stretches of time. We put aside food to be donated per one of the moving initiatives with food banks, told them, and they packed the food with our stuff anyway. When we asked that they wrap my handmade ceramics with some care, they rolled their eyes and made it seem like we were bothering them. They did not bring enough packing supplies (bc their standard is to not pad anything??) and by the end was just wrapping things in shrink wrap with no other protection. So many more examples, but I'll stop there. We are insisting that the moving service use a different subcontractor for the unpacking part of our move. I'll update this after that happens in August to let you know just how many things end up arriving broken

Flood Damaged Shipment
Worked with flatrate to move and store my property during the pandemic. During a storm their unit flooded due to improper drainage, but then they didn't notify my for 90 days of the flood so by the time they did everything was rotten, lost all my belongings. They have since not paid me anything and refuse to return calls and emails. On top of that they mischarged my credit card for storage after I moved (the now destroyed belongings) out and will not refund it. They are criminal. This story is what happened to me as well. https://nypost.com/2022/03/17/ny-couple-has-70k-worth-of-stuff-ruined-by-moving-company/
